12.7.5 Maximal Ratio Combining

The maximal ratio combining technique uses a weighted combination of all the received signals based on their signal to noise ratio (SNR). The stronger signal has more weight than the weaker one. Figure 12.7.5.a shows how the received signals are combined in maximal ratio. The signal received on Path 3 is the strongest, so it takes a bigger share, that is, half of the combined signal. The signal received on Path 2 is less strong, and takes a smaller share, that is, one third of the combined signal. The signal received on Path 3 is the weakest and takes smallest share, that is, one sixth of the combined signal.
